Surf is a Water-type move introduced in Generation I in which the user creates a wave and attacks opponents with it. The only way to learn this attack is using the HM03. This move appears in all games.

Outside Battle[]
By using Surf in the water, you can travel seas, lakes, etc. In some places, you also need to use Waterfall and in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald you can use Dive.
In Battle[]
Generation I and II[]
Uses a wave to attack foes in battle.
Generation III[]
It attacks with a wave. In Double Battles, it attacks both foes.
Generation IV and V[]
It attacks with a wave. In Double or Triple Battles, it attacks all nearby adjacent Pokémon, excluding the user. If any target, including your ally, has Dry Skin, Water Absorb, etc. it won't have any effect on them, but it will restore the Pokémon's HP.
