• Its name is derived from the chess piece "pawn" and a "poniard" (a small sharp dagger).
• Pawniard, along with its evolution Bisharp are the first Pokémon to have a Dark/Steel-type combination.
  • They are currently the only Pokémon to have this type combination.
• Pawniard appears to be based off of a samurai from Japanese pre-gunpowder warfare.
• Pawniard and its evolution Bisharp are the only Pokemon with a double resistance to Ghost.
